Packers sign Cedric Benson

After months of looking for a new team, running back Cedric Benson has finally landed in Green Bay.

The Packers had been expected to sign Benson, and that signing became official today, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

James Starks is currently the No. 1 running back in Green Bay, but he suffered a turf toe injury on Thursday and will be sidelined for at least a week. The 29-year-old Benson will have a good chance of unseating Starks and becoming the Packers’ starter.

The Bears took Benson with the fourth overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft, and he was a major disappointment in Chicago, failing to become a consistent playmaker in the Bears’ offense and finding himself in regular trouble off the field. But after signing with the Bengals, Benson began to flourish. Benson has had three straight 1,000-yard season, including rushing for 1,067 yards and five touchdowns in Cincinnati last year.
