A year after signing in Carolina, Olindo Mare is leaving.

The Panthers have released Mare today, a league source tells PFT.

Shortly after last year’s lockout ended, Mare signed a four-year, $12 million contract with the Panthers. But he had a mediocre season in Carolina in 2011, missing both of his field goal attempts of 50-plus yards.

The Panthers have also cut veteran punter Nick Harris in favor of rookie Brad Nortman, whom they selected in the sixth round of this year’s draft.

The decision to cut Mare leaves Justin Medlock as the only kicker on the Panthers’ roster. It’s not known yet whether the Panthers have settled on Medlock as their kicker for Week One, or whether they’ll consider bringing in another kicker. But their kicker won’t be Mare.
