Rams trying to re-sign Mark Clayton before March 4

One thing to keep in mind when considering the low amount of contract extensions signed early this offseason: It’s always like this.

Activity usually starts to pick up at the NFL Scouting Combine, which starts on Thursday. While we don’t expect nearly as many deals as a typical year, there still may be a small flurry of re-signings before a possible work stoppage hits.

The Rams are one team looking to solidify their team before the uncertainty hits. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports there has been a “steady dialogue” with wide receiver Mark Clayton.

“He’s certainly a candidate to get an extension done before the deadline. But if he doesn’t, that wouldn’t change our opinion on wanting him back, said Rams VP of football operations Kevin Demoff.

Clayton was easily the Rams’ best receiver before a patellar tendon injury ended his season in early October. His agent says he’ll be full speed by April.

The Rams have a big list of free agents, but most of them aren’t impact players. Defensive tackle Gary Gibson, who started all 16 games, is probably next on their wish list.
