Ravens assistant Ted Monachino in mix for Eagles defensive coordinator
The Eagles open Super Bowl week without a defensive coordinator and it doesn’t look like they’ll hire one until after the big game.
49ers defensive backs coach Ed Donatell has been linked with the job for a while and Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports that a member of the Ravens staff will also be considered for the opening. Linebackers coach Ted Monachino is drawing the attention of the Eagles, although there’s no indication that they’ve requested permission to interview Monachino at this point.
Monachino joined the Ravens in 2010 after spending five years on the staff in Jacksonville. He had been a coach at Arizona State before coming to the NFL and coached Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs at the collegiate level. The Ravens could block him from interviewing, although, again, things don’t seem to have progressed to that point yet.
Monachino does not have experience as a coordinator. Donatell spent three years as the coordinator in Atlanta and ran Green Bay’s defense from 2000 to 2003. That Packers run ended when the team fired him shortly after Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell caught a pass from Donovan McNabb to convert a 4th-and-26 en route to an Eagles playoff win.
