The Ravens created some cap room by signing quarterback Joe Flacco to a contract extension on Wednesday and they added a little more by parting ways with a veteran defensive starter.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Ravens have released inside linebacker Daryl Smith. The move clears $2.625 million under Baltimore’s cap.

Smith has started every game for the Ravens since joining the Ravens as a free agent in 2013. He had 121 tackles, three sacks and an interception last season and had 251 tackles while playing a key role as a pass defender in his first two seasons with the team.

Smith turns 34 on March 14, so he’s probably not going to be signing a particularly long deal with a new team. He should generate some interest as a veteran presence in the short term, however.

The Ravens have C.J. Mosley at one inside linebacker spot with Arthur Brown, the recently re-signed Albert McClellan and Zach Orr also on hand. They’ll likely be in the market for other options as the offseason progresses.
