With Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather making his first appearance with the team on Sunday and then tearing an ACL during the game, the team has a roster spot to fill.
The Redskins filled it by signing cornerback Jerome Murphy.
The Redskins announced that Meriweather has been officially placed on injured reserve, and that Murphy has joined the team. A third-round pick of the Rams in 2010, Murphy appeared in 14 games as a rookie. He missed all of 2011 with an ankle injury.
Cut in early September by St. Louis, Murphy has spent time with the Saints and Lions this season.
Meriweather signed with the Redskins in the offseason. A knee injury kept him out of action early in the year. He appeared to be ready to return against the Buccaneers, but a pre-game collision with receiver Aldrick Robinson aggravated the injury.
