The Chiefs have several impending free agents on their defense this offseason and it looks like safety Eric Berry is one of the ones they want to work on re-signing early in the process.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chiefs are “ramping up” talks with Berry about an extension. Berry returned to the lineup this year after his 2014 season was cut short following a lymphoma diagnosis and turned in an excellent season that ended with selections to both the Pro Bowl and the Associated Press All-Pro first team.
Earl Thomas has the highest annual salary among safeties at $10 million per year on a deal he signed in 2014 and any Berry deal will likely be in that neighborhood given the performance he’s turned in for Kansas City since they made him the fifth overall pick of the 2010 draft.
Linebacker Derrick Johnson, cornerback Sean Smith, linebacker Tamba Hali, defensive end Mike DeVito and defensive tackle Jaye Howard are some of the other Chiefs on their way to free agency, which leaves the team with plenty of decisions to make as the offseason gets rolling.
