Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said recently that the run of injuries the team has experienced at guard hasn’t added any “urgency” to their interest in former Chiefs and Patriots guard Brian Waters.
Now it seems that things have actually moved in the other direction. Mike Fisher of FOXSportsSouthwest.com reports that the team’s pursuit of Waters is a “dead deal” because “it looks like [Waters] just doesn’t want to play football.”
That’s not a particularly surprising conclusion to draw. Waters never showed up to the Patriots last season to play out the final year of his contract with the team and reportedly turned down offers for a sizable pay raise while remaining at home. The Cowboys have also reportedly made him several contract offers for this season that Waters has passed on.
The Cowboys also pursued Brandon Moore, who chose to retire after agreeing to terms with Dallas. Nate Livings and Ron Leary are both recovering from knee surgery, leaving Mackenzy Bernadeau (who missed time with a hamstring injury this summer) and David Arkin to start at guard in the team’s game against the Cardinals on Saturday.
