The Jets’ efforts to entice guards Orlando Franklin or Mike Iupati to accept a contract with the team fell short, but it looks like they will be bringing in some help at the position come the start of free agency.

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the team will sign guard James Carpenter, whose contract with the Seahawks came to an end after they declined to exercise an option for the 2015 season.

Injuries limited the 2011 first-round pick to 16 games in his first two seasons and there have been conditioning issues for PFT’s No. 54 free agent, but he’s played in 29 games the last two years and started most of them as the Seahawks won back-to-back NFC titles. Willie Colon isn’t expected back with the Jets as a free agent and Brian Winters was underwhelming the last two years before winding up on injured reserve.

If the Jets do seal the deal with Carpenter, it will be the second straight year they sign an offensive lineman away from the Seahawks. Right tackle Breno Giacomini will be in the second year of a four-year deal in 2015.
