The Rams had already penciled Case Keenum in as their starter, and then made the bold move to the top spot in the draft to select quarterback Jared Goff.
So it’s safe to say Nick Foles isn’t central to their plans, and Foles seems to be responding in kind.
According to Jim Trotter of ESPN, Foles has not participated in any team-run training sessions since Goff was chosen first overall. He had been a regular at offseason workouts prior to the draft, but wasn’t there for the start of OTAs Tuesday.
It wasn’t that long ago that he was viewed as the team’s answer at quarterback, if not the franchise passer they’ve been seeking.
They acquired him last offseason in the Sam Bradford trade, and signed him to a two-year, $24.5 million extension, which included $13.8 million in guarantees. But nine games into his reign as starter, he was benched for Keenum, and then promptly covered up.
They gave him a $6 million roster bonus in March, and his $1.75 million base salary for the year is guaranteed. They can’t fine him for missing the voluntary workouts, but could if he skips mandatory minicamp or training camp.
Foles has shown at times in the past he can be a serviceable quarterback, and someone might want him more than the Rams do. Perhaps by not showing up he’s making it known he’d prefer they find that team.
