Vikings coach Leslie Frazier told PFT Live last week that, if the team signs a veteran quarterback once free agency begins, the goal won’t be to acquire a mentor/understudy for Christian Ponder, but to bring in someone who will compete for the job.

According to Steve Wyche of NFL.com, the list doesn’t include eventually-to-be-former Titans quarterback Vince Young. Per Wyche, the Vikings have not had internal discussions regarding the possibility of acquiring Young -- and they apparently don’t plan to sign him.

We tend to think that, if the Vikings sign a veteran, it’ll be someone who tries to compete for the starting job, but who likely won’t be able to win it. That way, the perception of competition will push Ponder, Ponder will secure the job, and the veteran gladly will assume by default the role of mentor/understudy.
