The Bills just signed their starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor to a new contract, they have a backup with starting experience in EJ Manuel and they have a rookie with promise in Cardale Jones. Add those things together, and coach Rex Ryan says it couldn’t get much better.

We have a great quarterback situation,” Ryan said. “We have a proven starter, a proven backup and [Jones] is a young man who just keeps getting better and better.”

Taylor played only briefly in the Bills’ preseason opener, completing two of his three passes. Manuel came in and looked good, completing 10 of 18 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown. Jones looked even better at the end of the game, completing 11 of 21 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown, plus 34 rushing yards.

“I loved the way our quarterbacks played,” Ryan said. “It might not be reflected in our quarterback rating because we had four or five drops. The quarterbacks can’t throw it and catch it. We protect our quarterbacks, we can throw it.”

Ryan is always confident in his team in the preseason, so take those comments with a grain of salt. But a Bills team that a year ago didn’t know whether Taylor, Manuel or Matt Cassel would be its starter now feels very good at quarterback.
