Jets coach Rex Ryan says talk that he considered firing offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg this season is incorrect.
Asked today about a report that he considered firing Mornhinweg on two separate occasions during this season, Ryan said it just isn’t true.
“I would deny that, 100 percent I would deny that I’m looking to fire Marty or anybody,” Ryan said. “Maybe there’s a perception, when we challenge each other all the time, coaches, we’ve got to get the best out of our guys. When you have conversations, I don’t know where it’s coming from. To me, I think it’s a complete bogus deal. So, I’m not saying it wasn’t said by somebody, but it certainly wasn’t said by me or thought by me.”
Ryan said he finds it “hilarious” how wrong some of the reports about internal discord with the Jets are. According to Ryan, the only problem is that everyone is disappointed with the Jets’ 2-10 record.
“I’m tight with every single coach here,” Ryan said. “I believe in every single coach that I have, and that’s the truth. Our strength coach? Best in the league. I’m completely happy with our staff. I’m not happy with our results. Nobody is. So what you do, you challenge each other a little bit, ‘Hey, how do we get better? Are we looking at things?’ But not once, not once, have I thought about replacing any coach.”
It’s a virtual certainty that Ryan himself will be fired at the end of the season, and the coaching staff will be fired with him. But until the season ends, Ryan says his staff will remain as it is.
