Bills coach Rex Ryan’s scheme was the focus of complaints by defensive end Mario Williams last season with Williams saying that he wanted more opportunities to get after the quarterback than the defense afforded him.
Williams is now a member of the Dolphins after the Bills released him and his $19.9 million cap number and Bills coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday that he thinks Williams got exactly what he wanted in the move.
“I think he’ll play left end, and when you’ve got [defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh] inside, it’s set up to play a 4-3 defense. I think that’s what they’ll do with him. Play a nine technique, everything he wants,” Ryan said, via ESPN.com.
While Williams was complaining about the scheme, others around the Bills were complaining about Williams’ effort level and disruptiveness in the locker room during the 2015 season. Ryan called those critiques “kind of overblown,” although he noted that the Bills may have the date of their games with the Dolphins “circled” on the schedule now that Williams is in Miami.
