While people ponder whether Colt McCoy should get a chance at quarterback in place of the turnover-prone Kirk Cousins, the man the Redskins had at quarterback to start the season is inching closer to a return to the lineup.
Coach Jay Gruden said Monday that a return to team drills for Robert Griffin III remains at least a week away, but that he believes the quarterback’s ankle has healed enough for him to begin doing individual drills this week.
“I think he’s going to start individual drills this week,” Gruden said, via CSNWashington.com. “As far as actually taking practice reps I think that will be at least another week. We’ll get him out there, do some individual drills, throw some balls to the wideouts. That will be the first step. Then next week we’ll try to get him maybe in some practice situations and see where he is.”
If all goes well for Griffin in his return to practice, it probably wouldn’t be out of the question that he made it back for the October 27 Monday night game against the Cowboys. That might be too late to save the team’s season, but it would leave them half a season to figure out if Griffin can look any better in their offensive system than he did before he got hurt.
