The Texans are playing better-than-expected football, with only their lack of a quarterback keeping them from being one of the league’s true surprise teams.
And for the first time since the job was given to veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in the summer, there’s at least a hint of a possible change.
After another inconsistent day from Fitzpatrick, Texans coach Bill O’Brien said he’s going to look at all his options to “spark” a stagnant offense. Fitzpatrick went 13-of-27 for 203 yards, two touchdowns and an one interception in a loss to the Eagles, unable to capitalize on four Eagles turnovers.
“I think we have to evaluate everything,” O’Brien said, via Brian Smith of the Houston Chronicle. “I don’t think you can always – and I’ve said this along – I don’t think you can look at one position and put all the blame on that.
“I think we have to look at, as far as what we’re doing offensively, we have to look at … who’s playing what, what positions they’re playing, how we’re getting the ball, how we’re playing at every position, including quarterback — we have to look at all of that.”
Of course, if he’s looking for volunteers, he seems to have one on his roster.
Hours after the game, backup Ryan Mallett tweeted what seemed to be a plea for playing time.
“I’m staying focused for when the time comes,” Mallett wrote. “Seize the opportunity #justwaiting”
Of course, that has since been deleted, but not before causing a stir among the Texans fan base, who are watching a good opportunity wasted because the team didn’t fill the top item on the offseason shopping list.
