The decision to make offensive line coach Aaron Kromer the interim to the interim head coach in New Orleans came from the top of the organization, with owner Tom Benson and G.M. Mickey Loomis making the choice. But they sought plenty of input from the men whom Kromer will be leading for six games over seven weeks.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the organization solicited input from key players. What they heard is that Kromer knows how the players prepare and work in the week before the game, and how they prepare and work the night before the game.
It also was decided, we’re told, that team decided that the transition from Kromer back to Joe Vitt after the end of Vitt’s six-game suspension will be easier than the shift from defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo back to Vitt would have been -- given that Spagnuolo has been a head coach.
It’s critical that, once Vitt returns, the players aren’t confused about who the coach really is. Between that factor and the reality that Kromer has four full years of working with suspended coach Sean Payton, the decision to go with Kromer became more clear.
