The Chargers have spent the last two days delivering Rocky Balboa-style body blows to the San Diego committee charged with resolving the 14-year stadium issue. Now, Mayor Kevin Faulconer has decided to take a few swings of his own.
In a letter to Chargers owner Dean Spanos, posted on Twitter by Faulconer’s press secretary, Craig Gustafson, the mayor complains about the comments made in recent days by Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani, calling Fabiani’s tone “divisive.” Faulconer ultimate offers to meet with Spanos in an effort to resolve the lingering stadium problem.
Appearing on Tuesday’s PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Fabiani made clear the team’s belief that the time for action has arrived, and that the team must keep all options open, including a move to L.A. Fabiani also agreed that the team’s Monday remarks to the committee may be interpreted as a message that the Chargers don’t want a proposal that is simply aimed at providing political cover in the event the Chargers leave town.
It’s hard not to view the city’s current effort as a too-little, too-late attempt to salvage the ability to say “hey, we tried” when the Chargers return to the city where the team was founded in 1960. If that’s not the case, it’s incumbent on Faulconer to persuade the public and, more importantly, the Chargers of that fact ASAP.
