The Seattle Seahawks released wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh on Saturday.
The move became official when the Seahawks were unable to find a trade partner for the 33-year-old wideout, whose $7 million 2010 salary is fully guaranteed. Mike Williams and Deion Branch now form Seattle’s starting receiver duo. Deon Butler and rookie Golden Tate are next on the depth chart.
Though many rumors have connected him to the Vikings and even his former team, the Bengals, Houshmandzadeh’s best fit on paper would be in Washington. The Redskins currently plan to start over-the-hill Joey Galloway opposite Santana Moss. Houshmandzadeh could fill the possession and slot receiver roles, replacing Galloway outside in two-receiver formations.
As NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora pointed out on Twitter late Friday night, Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb has politicked for receiver help. And after signing a one-year “prove it” contract with the Skins, Houshmandzadeh could probably get notoriously reckless owner Daniel Snyder to pay big bucks to keep him off the free agent market in 2011.
