Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford got off to a shaky start last season, and his poor play contributed to the midseason firing of offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. But when Jim Bob Cooter was installed as the offensive coordinator, Stafford caught fire, with 20 touchdowns and four interceptions in nine games in Cooter’s offense.
This year, Stafford feels like he has the ability to keep things going, although he acknowledged that it’s hard to carry momentum from one season into the next.
“It’s going to be a long break,” Stafford said, via Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News. “Hopefully I still got the hot hand.”
Stafford said that he and Cooter have similar philosophies, and even when they disagree they work together well. Stafford believes the offense is shaping up for a strong season in 2016, just like late in 2015.
“We’re going to get it exactly the way we like it,” Stafford said.
The second half of the 2015 season may be remembered as the beginning of a beautiful friendship for Stafford and Cooter.
