When Arian Foster had groin surgery before the start of the season, the Texans didn’t bring in any outside help at running back to help them on offense until Foster was healthy enough to return to the lineup.
It doesn’t look like the team will be altering their approach in the wake of Foster’s season-ending Achilles injury. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the plan in Houston is to stick with the backs already on their roster.
Alfred Blue, Chris Polk and Jonathan Grimes are those backs and all three saw work in the first three weeks of the season when Foster was out. Blue was nominally the starter, but only had one game where he saw a much heavier workload than the other two backs and has been bothered by a toe injury in recent weeks. That’s left Polk to get a bit more work and chances are good that the Texans will be using a committee approach rather than having anyone step in as a workhorse in Foster’s place.
However things play out for the rest of this year, it will be interesting to see how the Texans play things with Foster in the offseason. He’s due $6.5 million in salary for 2016, when he’ll be 30 coming off of season-ending injuries in two of the last three years.
