The Impact Of The NFLN-Comcast Deal

As the news has had a chance to sink in to our otherwise thick and oft-impenetrable skulls, the significance of the recent deal between NFL Network and Comcast gradually has become more clear. Since we’ve had access to NFLN since its November 1, 2003 launch (two years to the day after PFT launched), we’ve taken for granted the presence of the league-owned network among the many channels we never watch. But here’s the deal. Only a fraction of the country has been able to enjoy the only network dedicated to pro football. The nightly Total Access show, hosted more-than-capably by Rich Eisen, is appointment viewing for the NFL fan. Now, millions more NFL fans will now be able to enjoy Total Access every night. Apart from Total Access, NFLN features the excellent work of our friends at NFL Films -- including the Top Ten series that yours truly somehow has managed to infiltrate. There also are full broadcasts of classic games and, as we all know by now, eight live regular-season games per year. For more on what the NFLN-Comcast deal means, here’s a PFTV segment.
