Todd Bowles: Bryce Petty will be “ready” if Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t

The Jets don’t know at the moment if quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will be able to play or not this week.

But if he can’t recover from his MCL sprain in time to face the Rams, coach Todd Bowles expressed confidence in backup Bryce Petty.

Yeah, he’ll be ready,” Bowles said of the second-year quarterback, via Darryl Slater of NJ.com.

Of course, they’re going to give Fitzpatrick a few days to see if he has a chance to play first. Bowles described Fitzpatrick as “day-to-day,” as you might imagine.

“I don’t know,” Bowles said of the veteran starter. “I’ve got to see him run around a little bit on Wednesday and Thursday first. . . .

“If he misses a significant amount of time, then Bryce will play. He’ll have to practice some on Friday, at least, and have a good understanding of the game plan. And we’ll make a decision going forward.”

Of course, there are many who think the Jets should give Fitzpatrick all the time he needs to get well, since he hasn’t been very good on the field this season. But considering the extreme lack of experience behind him, they’re willing to wait until later in the week to declare.
