Tom Brady: Darrelle Revis has “intimate knowledge of how we do things”
Darrelle Revis picked up more than just a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots.
And going into this week’s first reunion with him, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady admitted that made an already good player even more dangerous.
During his weekly interview on WEEI, Brady said the Patriots could also benefit from the time spent studying Revis, but knows he has a challenge this week.
“He’s got, obviously, an intimate knowledge of how we do things,” Brady said, via Phil Perry of CSNNE.com. “And kind of the skill set of our players and our formations, and vice versa. I know how he likes to play things. His play style is very similar to what it’s always been.
“He’s a phenomenal player. Some of those players you play against where you go, ‘God, how did they know it was going to be this route, or that?’ Sometimes they just know by what they see, or their instincts, or feel, by the way the receiver walks to the line of scrimmage, the way the right tackle looks in his stance. I don’t know what he’s looking at, but he diagnoses plays and routes. He’s off to a great start this year.”
Revis has three interceptions and three fumble recoveries so far this season, which caught the eye of his former coach as well. But as you’d imagine, Belichick downplayed any edge Revis had now having been behind the curtain.
“What we know, we know. What they know, they know,” Belichick said. “It comes up every week. There are always players on our team or other teams that have been in other organizations. We’ve played against them, or they’ve been with us, whatever it is.
“It’s really a weekly thing. Whatever we know about the player, we know about them. Whatever they know about us, they know about us. Honestly, it’s basically every week. It’s not like we have a big conference or a big meeting about, ‘This guy was here, and now he’s there.’ We could go on and on about that on a weekly basis.”
Of course, not often is that player as central to a game plan as Revis was, or as accomplished. So as much as they might want to diminish it, they’re also smart enough to know what he knows, and not play into his hands.
