There’s been a lot of talk about the Saints and quarterback Drew Brees coming to terms on an extension this offseason that would both keep him in New Orleans and lower his $30 million cap hit for the 2016 season.
Brees said late last month that he’s confident a deal will get done, but also said that he’s comfortable playing out the final year of his deal in the event it doesn’t happen. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday, Brees’ agent Tom Condon said his impression is that the Saints feel the same way about letting things ride.
“At one point, New Orleans wanted to talk about a cap re-do, and Drew was more than happy to do that,” Condon said, via the New Orleans Advocate. “There were some intervening situations that occurred, so they didn’t need the cap room, and they seem to be satisfied with carrying that number right now.”
The reference to an immediate move for cap space likely had to do with cornerback Josh Norman, who was on the Saints’ radar before signing with the Redskins. Norman wasn’t expected to hit the open market and there aren’t other players out there who are likely to command big salaries, which may keep the Brees extension talks from heating up in the near future.
