Whether the press conference brush-off of owner John Mara was a sign of anger or just a coincidence, it’s clear that former coach Tom Coughlin thinks he should have been given more time with the Giants.
And he wants a chance to prove himself, with someone.
Coughlin made it clear to Peter King of TheMMQB.com that he wants to get back into coaching.
“I’ve coached 47 years of my life,” Coughlin said. “You take it away, and that’s not an easy thing to duplicate.”
This is usually the time of year a coach is getting to know his draft picks and rookies, and going through a round of minicamps before a brief summer vacation and the inevitable grind of a season. But Coughlin said his “motor is starting to run again,” but acknowledged it might be hard to convince a team to park a 70-year-old motor into any chassis.
“We’ll see,” he said. “It’ll take two to tango. The 70-year-old-man stuff will be a factor, and I’m sure they’ll know this would be a three- or four-year thing. . . .
“They’ll have to know the guy. If I have an opportunity to speak to anyone [about a coaching job], they’ll see what I’d be able to do for them.”
Coughlin’s interview with the Eagles this offseason was a non-starter, particularly with the way he ripped the Giants organization for their handling of him. It did nothing to change the “get off my lawn” image many have of the two-time Super Bowl champion, and might prevent others from showing the interest Coughlin is clearly trying to drum up.
