After running back Trent Richardson was released by the Colts, he said he’d be a starter with his next team.
We found out the Raiders will be that next team when they announced Richardson’s signing on Tuesday. Richardson reportedly signed a two-year deal with the team and joins Latavius Murray and Roy Helu at tailback on the roster.
How they’ll stack up come September remains to be seen. Richardson said that Raiders coach Jack Del Rio told him that the top job can be his, but it won’t just be waiting for him because he was once the third overall pick in the draft.
“We went over the offense and saw a lot of stuff that I saw in college,” Richardson said, via CSNBayArea.com. “I know this playbook already, especially when it comes to the run. I know what they expect and how they’re going to spread the field, putting me in a position to be successful. With that, in talking to Coach, he just said there is just a lot of opportunity out here. He said he isn’t going to promise me anything, but if I come in and work, I can be that bell cow.”
Richardson said he’s looking forward to the “fresh start” in Oakland’s offense after what he termed a “bad marriage” of his style with that of the Colts. Motivation shouldn’t be a problem for Richardson, either, since another busted relationship will make him unlikely to be invited into another one.
