Why did Broncos pull mega-offer to Von Miller?

So why did the Broncos pull the six-year, $114.5 million offer to Von Miller? The Broncos haven’t provided an explanation, but the universe of potential reasons is small.

First, the Broncos may have simply decided that the offer was too strong, yielding to buyer’s remorse before actually making the purchase.

Second, the Broncos may be flexing their Elway muscles, sending Miller the kind of take-it-or-leave-too-late-you-left-it message that a team with a freshly-minted Lombardi Trophy often becomes emboldened to send.

Third, and perhaps most likely, the Broncos don’t want to be squeezed off their offer as the July 15 deadline for negotiating a long-term deal approaches. If the Broncos had left the offer on the table now, the message would have been that even more would be available on or before the date the deadline arrives, at which time the two sides are typically more likely to move toward their bottom-line positions.

By taking the offer off the table now, the Broncos could be making it clear that the pending offer is their bottom-line position, and that the best Miller can hope for is having the revoked offer reinstated on or about July 14.
