There are a bunch of running back injuries to track this week.
The fact all of the injuries come at the same position gives me an excuse to be lazy and put them all in one post, even if Florio would gladly separate them out. (More pageviews!)
This format also helps you get all your information in one place. It’s really a win-win. Except for Florio.
1. Lions running back Jahvid Best (toe) sat out practice Thursday, but he said he will “definitely” play Sunday. We’ll see. Players are often more optimistic than training staffs. It’s tougher for rookies to miss installation early in the week and still play than veterans.
2. Ravens running back Ray Rice says he’s “sure” he’ll be ready to play. We trust him more because he returned to a limited practice Thursday despite his knee contusion.
3. Rams running back Steven Jackson missed practice again with a groin injury. Things aren’t looking up. “The leg’s still tight; the groin’s still tight.”
The Rams signed Chauncey Washington off the Jets’ practice squad, which isn’t a great sign.
4. Saints running back Pierre Thomas (groin) did not practice for a second straight day. He’s expected to be a game-time decision. His backup Chris Ivory isn’t 100% either.
5. Bengals running back Cedric Benson returned to a full practice after sitting out Wednesday.
6. Patriots running back Fred Taylor sat out practice. After the team picked up Thomas Clayton for depth, it would be a surprise if Taylor suited up this week.
UPDATE: Chargers running back Ryan Mathews practiced again. He should be back from his ankle sprain.
