The Seahawks claimed cornerback Derion Kendrick off waivers from the Rams on Wednesday, the team announced.
They released veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin in a corresponding move.
Kendrick, who won national championships at both Clemson and Georgia, began his college career as a receiver before converting to cornerback. He also returned kickoffs during his first two seasons at Clemson.
The Rams made Kendrick a sixth-round pick in 2022 and appeared in 15 games as a rookie, making six starts. Kendrick took over a starting role in 2023, starting 12 of 17 games played, then he missed the entire 2024 season with a torn ACL.
In his career, Kendrick recorded 92 tackles, 14 passes defensed, three tackles for loss and one interception, which came in a Rams’ 2023 win over Seattle.
Griffin, a 2017 third-round pick of the Seahawks, spent his first four seasons in Seattle, earning Pro-Bowl honors in 2019. He signed with Jacksonville as a free agent in 2021.
In addition to his time with the Jaguars, Griffin also played for the Texans, Panthers and Vikings over the past two seasons. He signed with Seattle as a free agent earlier this offseason.
The Seahawks are adding a free-agent linebacker.
Per Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, Seattle has agreed to sign Chazz Surratt after he was released by the 49ers earlier this week.
Surratt, 28, was a Vikings third-round pick in 2021. He spent just one year with the Vikings before he was waived and ended up with the Jets.
He played with New York through 2024, receiving the most playing time of his career last year. In 17 games with five starts, Surratt recorded 28 total tackles with two tackles for loss and one QB hit. Surratt was on the field for 12 percent of defensive snaps and 63 percent of special teams snaps.
Seattle will have to make a corresponding move to get Surratt on the 53-man roster.
Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling didn’t have to wait long to find a new team.
The Seahawks released Valdes-Scantling in one of the moves they made to drop their roster to 53 players this week and his agents told Tom Pelissero of NFL Media that their client will be signing with the 49ers.
It’s no surprise that the 49ers were looking for help at receiver. Brandon Aiyuk is on the physically unable to perform list, Demarcus Robinson is suspended for three games, and several other wideouts, including Jauan Jennings, are dealing with injuries. They recently traded for Skyy Moore and Valdes-Scantling will give them a pair of former Chiefs wideouts.
Valdes-Scantling played for the Chiefs in 2022 and 2023 before moving on to the Bills and Saints last season. He started eight games for New Orleans and caught 17 passes for 385 yards and four touchdowns.
The Seahawks really like rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe. They like him enough to give him a package of plays, despite being the backup quarterback.
The news emerged unexpectedly, when coach Mike Macdonald was asked an unrelated question: “Could Milroe be a scout team quarterback?”
“Of course,” Macdonald told reporters. “First of all, he needs reps, as does Drew [Lock], We’re going to have plays for Jalen and game plans, and he’s going to rep those with the ones. However we build the package for him, going into games, he needs those reps in walk-through and full-speed, so that’s going to be important. How we do it, who gets how many reps, all that, I mean Sam [Darnold], it starts with how many reps he needs to get ready and then we work off from there.”
The fact that Macdonald blurted it out absent a specific question invites speculation that he’s simply trying to force opponents to spend time to be ready for Milroe. Which will necessarily eat into the time available to get ready for the base offense, under Darnold.
Regardless, Macdonald said it. It’s a thing now. And we’ll see whether and to what extent that’s how it all plays out. And whether Milroe gets playing time with the first-team offense.
