The Columbus Blue Jackets locked up a key piece of their present and future, with the signing of goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to a four-year, $29.7 million contract extension in a deal that was announced Friday.

Shortly after the deal was announced, the Blue Jackets lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bobrovsky allowed four goals on 31 shots faced, with all of goals he allowed coming in the opening period.

But he has shown in the past that he can carry this Blue Jackets team. The Blue Jackets now hope he can continue to help do that, just with a much larger salary and cap hit.

“We believe he’s only going to improve,” Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen told the Columbus Dispatch.

“Ultimately it’s up to the player to prove he’s worth the contract he gets. But we evaluate these players every day. We believe, with his hard work and dedication, he’s going to be the top, or one of the top, goalies in this league for a long time.”
