Caps coach on Neuvirth’s status: “We don’t know yet”

Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth will see a doctor this afternoon after suffering a lower-body injury that forced him to leave last night’s Washington-Florida game.

When asked about Neuvirth’s status, Capitals coach Dale Hunter could only say, “We don’t know yet.”

If Neuvirth isn’t ready for the start of the playoffs, 22-year-old rookie Braden Holtby is likely to be the man between the pipes. Washington’s other goalie, Tomas Vokoun, is considered “day to day,” but it doesn’t sound like he’s close to returning from a groin injury.

Holtby (2.79 GAA, .910 SV%) has been decent in six appearances for the Caps.

“I think Braden is a very calm and composed kid,” Brooks Laich said today, as per “He’s come in at tough times in the past. He’s been caught up in a numbers game [behind Vokoun and Neuvirth] but I think he’s an NHL goalie and now you’re going to see him. We feel entirely confident.”
