Detroit’s Weiss has surgery for sports hernia
Red Wings forward Stephen Weiss has had successful surgery for a sports hernia and is expected back after the Olympic break, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.
It’s been a dreadful start for Weiss in Detroit after signing as a free agent in the summer. The 30-year-old who was expected to center the Red Wings’ second line has just four points in 26 games, and now he’ll be forced to rehab from surgery.
“The good news is there’s a three-week Olympic break,” said Wings general manager Ken Holland, who can’t be feeling altogether great about Weiss’s five-year, $24.5 million contract.
On the bright side, Detroit’s won two straight after going winless in six. The Wings host the Islanders tonight.
