The Anaheim Ducks announced that they’ve signed defenseman Sami Vatanen to a four-year contract extension. The deal is reportedly worth a total of $19.5 million.

The 25-year-old was one of the Ducks’ most important blueliners last season. Vatanen scored nine goals and a career-high 38 points while averaging 21:18 per game. He led the team’s defensemen in scoring, points-per-game and power play points (19).

The Ducks entered the off-season with roughly $18.97 million in cap space according to General Fanager. That doesn’t include Vatanen’s new deal. Anaheim still has a number of key free agents to deal with between now and July 1st.

Hampus Lindholm and Frederik Andersen are scheduled to become restricted free agents while David Perron and Jamie McGinn will be UFAs.
