Flames surge late, Hiller finishes off former team in SO

Nate Thompson, Jonas Hiller,

It might not have been an ideal start for Calgary Flames goaltender Jonas Hiller against his old team, but he has to be happy with the ending as Calgary secured a 4-3 shootout victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

Sami Vatanen and Matt Beleskey beat Hiller in the first and second periods respectively to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead. Of course, it’s hard to put the deficit squarely on Hiller’s shoulders when his teammates combined for just seven shots on goal through the first 40 minutes.

Calgary rallied in the third period though with Dennis Wideman scoring his sixth and seventh goals of the season. He’s tied with Brent Burns for the goal scoring lead among blueliners and by the time Wideman was done tonight, Calgary had jumped to a 3-2 lead.

Kyle Palmieri managed to even the contest with the man advantage so that Anaheim could at least get a consolation point, but Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan each beat Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen in the shootout.

Anaheim has now dropped six of its last seven contests, although five of those defeats finished in overtime or a shootout. The Flames are going in the opposite direction with three straight wins.
