Green calls this year’s Caps ‘the best team we’ve had overall’

The Washington Capitals aren’t going to finish the regular season with 121 points, like they did in 2009-10.

They’re not going to score 318 goals, either.

Still, according to defenseman Mike Green, this season’s version of the Caps is the best he’s played for.

“By far the best team we’ve had overall,” Green told ESPN’s Craig Custance on Sunday. “In my 10 years here, absolutely.”

Certainly, there’s a lot to like. The Caps are top 10 in both goals and goals against. They’ve got the NHL’s best power play, thanks in large part to having the NHL’s top scorer in Alex Ovechkin. The defense is deep. The goaltending has been excellent. There’s no shortage of size. And, of course, new coach Barry Trotz has brought and implemented his trademark structure.

Granted, we’re not sure they’re “by far” better than that 2009-10 team that was shocked by Jaroslav Halak and the Montreal Canadiens, but that’s in the past anyway.

The 2014-15 Caps have two regular-season games left before they can take another crack at a deep playoff run. Washington hasn’t been past the second round since 1998.
