Panthers’ Huberdeau named February’s rookie of the month
After scoring six goals and nine points in 13 games, Florida center Jonathan Huberdeau was named the NHL’s rookie of the month for February.
Huberdeau, 19, did most of his damage with a four-point (2G-2A) effort in a 5-2 win in Philadelphia on Feb. 21 -- which included scoring the game-winning goal on a penalty shot.
In doing that, Huberdeau tied a Panthers record for most points in one game by a rookie, co-held by Mark Parrish and Jesse Belanger.
The former QMJHL Saint John standout now sits second among all first-year scorers with 13 points, five back of Tampa Bay’s Cory Conacher.
As for other rookies in the running for February’s award?
-- Conacher had 4G-5A-9PTS in 14 games.
-- Montreal forward Alex Galchenyuk had 2G-5A-7PTS in 14 games.
-- Edmonton defenseman Justin Schultz had 3G-4A-7PTS in 12 games.
