Pens ink 2012 first-rounders Pouliot, Maatta
The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms with their two first-round picks at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft -- defencemen Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta.
Both signed three-year, entry-level contracts.
Pouliot, 18, was taken eighth overall at the draft -- the pick Pittsburgh acquired in the Jordan Staal trade. A skillful, puck-moving defenseman, Pouliot’s received several comparisons to Florida’s Brian Campbell and impressed Penguins brass at July’s prospect development camp.
Maatta, also 18, was taken 22nd overall after a stellar rookie season with OHL London in 2011-12. He made the league’s All-Rookie team and led the Knights defense in goals, assists and points.
He participated in Pittsburgh’s prospect camp this past July and played for Team Finland at the World Junior Championship evaluation camp in August.
