Report: Rangers hire Ulf Samuelsson as assistant coach

The New York Rangers have begun to assemble Alain Vigneault’s coaching staff.

Former Phoenix associate coach and ex-NHLer Ulf Samuelsson will reportedly be hired as one of Vigneault’s assistants, according to Larry Brooks of the New York Post.

Samuelsson, 49, was with the Coyotes from 2006-11, working under Wayne Gretzky for the first three years of his tenure, then Dave Tippett for the last two.

Last season, he was the head coach of Modo of the Swedish Elite League, taking the club to a seventh-place finish in the regular season and a quarterfinal loss in the playoffs.

The former NHLer -- who won a pair of Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh during the early 90s -- got his coaching start with the Rangers organization, serving as an assistant with AHL Hartford in 2005-06.

With the Wolfpack, he coached current Rangers Dan Girardi and Marc Staal.
