Timonen inks one-year extension with Flyers
Kimmo Timonen isn’t ready to hang up his skates just yet. The 39-year-old defenseman has agreed to a one-year extension with the Philadelphia Flyers.
The financial terms of the deal aren’t yet known, but he just finished a one-year, $6 million contract.
Not including the shortened season, Timonen has recorded at least 35 points in each of his last 11 campaigns, but he barely reached that mark in 2013-14. That’s because he struggled out of the gate and didn’t even get his first point until Nov. 5. He had just five points in his first 27 contests.
He got better from there and was one of the Flyers’ most effective weapons with the man advantage. He also averaged 20:19 minutes per contest.
Timonen will go down as one of the top offensive defensemen of his era, but he hasn’t won the Stanley Cup yet. He came close with the Flyers in 2010, but he doubtlessly hopes that he will still be able to retire as a champion.
