The year 2020 has been an unprecedented time. And unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures.
On Thursday, Sport Oregon, along with the Hopscotch Foundation, will televise a one-hour live virtual program, hosted by former professional track athlete Sasha Spencer-Atwood and John Canzano, Oregonian columnist and host of the Bald Faced Truth radio show. It will air on NBC Sports Northwest on Thursday, December 3rd from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. PST and for free online at https://event.gives/fuelthefuture.
Why is this all happening?
In 2019, 1 in 5 youth in Oregon experienced food insecurity, and today the COVID-19 pandemic continues to push more families into financial hardship, increase the threat of hunger across communities, and deepen inequities in access to safe ways to stay physically active. In response, the Sport Oregon Foundation has partnered with the Hopscotch Foundation- a volunteer powered organization combatting food insecurity in Portland- to launch its first major fundraising event.
"Food insecurity is a huge issue in our community," Jim Etzel of Sport Oregon said on the Brian Noe Show. "Hunger is a pretty big barrier. If you are hungry, pretty sure you’re not going to be physically active or if you’re trying to compete, whether in the classroom or on the playing field or the court, you’re not going to compete very well if you’re hungry."
The Hopscotch Foundation focuses on providing balanced food to the youth they serve. What started as a “food pantry” in one school has now expanded to 16 schools around the state.
“Fuel the Future” will include a live virtual program featuring interviews about the work and impact of the Hopscotch and Sport Oregon Foundations from community leaders, students and professional athletes, an opportunity for live giving through a virtual paddle raise; an online silent auction; and a virtual raffle. The silent auction is open to public participation and will remain open until December 3rd at 5:00 p.m. PST.
One entry into a random drawing for an Oregon Country Wine Weekend Vacation Package, provided by Stoller Family Estate! Prize includes a complimentary 2-night stay at the Wine Farm House on the stunning Stoller property, and a private winemaker's dinner for up to 10 guests. The drawing will take place during the virtual program on December 3rd. There’s also the chance to win box seats to an Oregon State Beavers baseball game and a private tour of the stadium. Are you a soccer fan? The same opportunity is offered in the silent auction for a Portland Timbers game!
Those are just a few offerings in the silent auction, but there are many more related to the Portland Trail Blazers, Oregon Ducks, Hillsboro Hops, Portland Winterhawks and other northwest teams! Viewers can participate in live by giving during the program or by making a donation online or via text message. Further donation instructions will be provided throughout the program. Or, a donation can be made any time now through December 3rd on the event website. While the live virtual program is free to view, viewers are strongly encouraged to RSVP by registering on the event website.
