NFL News and Rumors: The Hue Jackson era is officially over
The trade deadline is tomorrow
We are now halfway through the 2018 NFL football season. The NFL trade deadline is tomorrow: Tuesday, Oct 30th, 2018. Several personnel changes to come, but let’s take a look at the news and rumors surrounding the NFL through eight weeks of action…
- The Hue Jackson era is over in Cleveland
- Do the Steelers even need Bell?
- Jameis Winston benched
- A kicker had the best run of the day
- Trade rumors
Hue Jackson fired from Cleveland
Since drafting rookie QB Baker Mayfield and seeing his progression in Cleveland’s system, things were beginning to look up in the Browns’ franchise. When hope seemed to rise, fans began to resurface and come out of hiding, and the win column had a positive number, today was a different story.
The Cleveland Browns have fired head coach Hue Jackson, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
After going 1-15 in 2016, and 0-16 in 2017, the Browns have doubled their win total from last season already halfway
through 2018 at 2-5-1.
The Browns’ organization is currently seeking a new head coach.

Conner vs. Bell in the backfield
So, we are now through week 8 of the NFL. About a month ago, it was rumored that Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell was to return during the Steelers’ BYE week (last week), which started off with him holding out on his contract negotiations. Here we are, week 8, and still no Bell.
But do the Steelers even really need him to come back. Yes, he is one of the most elusive and creative running backs in the NFL, a fantasy owners dream, Bell provides depth, and his stats are there to prove it. However, let’s take a look at the comparison between Bell and Steelers current starter James Conner, a rookie out of Pittsburgh.
Bell (2017 stats) through 15 games rushed for 1,291 total yards, 4.0 yards per carry, 86.1 yards per game, and nine touchdowns.
Conner (through eight weeks of 2018) has rushed for 599 yards, 4.7 yards per carry, 85.6 yards per game, and nine touchdowns.

Jameis Winston benched
Fitzmagic is back. Tampa Bay quarterback Jameis Winston found his way to the Buccaneers bench after throwing four interceptions vs. the Cincinnati Bengals in the team’s 37-34 loss at home. It was time for Fitzmagic to shine. With 2:10 left in the third quarter, backup Ryan Fitzpatrick entered the game and lead a near comeback for the Bucs, but came up just short.
Fitz went 11-for-15 for 194 yards and two touchdowns in just 17 minutes.
Moving forward, the Bucs will have an interesting competition to watch out for. Both Winston and Fitzpatrick have proven to guide the troops, however, both have been benched this season too. Consistency and stability at quarterback is greatly needed and the Bucs don’t have either with their options.
Perhaps it is time for third string Ryan Griffin to see some action, the five-year QB out of Tulane…

A kicker had the best run of the day
Michael Dickson, the Seattle Seahawks’ rookie punter, had one of the best runs of the day in all of Sunday football. Seattle was pinned deep into their own territory, Dickson’s heels with just a few blades of astroturf away from the back of the end zone. The Hawks had a 28-14 lead inside three minutes of game time left.
Now every sign showed to punt the ball away and to do so as quickly as possible with such little room to work with: up two touchdowns, time winding down, don’t risk anything… Instead, Dickson rolled to his right, perhaps to avoid some pressure up the middle and for a rugby-style kick, but instead tucked the ball and ran for the first down.
After the game, Dickson responds, “Yeah, I’ve got big balls, They call me Big Balls Dickson.”
With the NFL trade deadline tomorrow, here is a list, according to SB Nation, on what may conspire heading into this next 24 hours:
- Patriots still shopping for receivers, perhaps Denver’s Demaryius Thomas, or DeSean Jackson?
- Bills running back LeSean McCoy (rumored to have talked with the Philadelphia Eagles) and who knows what is going on with Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell.
- Other names thrown out there: Pierre Garcon (WR, 49ers), Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (S, Packers), Janoris Jackson (CB, New Giants), Patrick Peterson (CB, Cardinals), Tyrod Taylor (QB, Browns)
