A decade of turning heads: 10 best Oregon uniform combinations
So many to choose from...
It’s beginning to look a lot like 2020. A lot can change in 10 years, but one thing that has remained is Nike, Phil Knight and Oregon’s commitment to having some of the sleekest (and eye-catching) threads in all of college football.
10. 2012 Rose Bowl
It’s only fitting that I’d pick this combination, as Oregon’s 2020 Rose Bowl is a throwback rematch to the 2012 Rose Bowl vs. Wisconsin. In their first Rose Bowl victory since 1916, the Ducks donned a forest green combo and stunning chrome winged helmets that would be forever cemented in Oregon history. It was the first time the Ducks wore chrome helmets, sparking a trend that spread across all of college football.
9. 2009 Civil War
I had to go back to 2009 for this one, but it’s so good I couldn’t leave it off. It was almost in this decade... Yellow helmet, green throwback jersey and white pants… It’s a great look with the updated Oregon ”O” on the helmet. The curve ball combination worked, the Ducks beat the Oregon State Beavers, 37-33 and locked up the Pac-10 title.
8. 2019 Nightmare green
Coach Mario Cristobal certainly tuned down the amount of new uniform combos but the Ducks did unveil the new “Nightmare Green” color for their “Nike Vapor Fusion uniform. In Oregon’s 20th anniversary of its partnership with Nike, the new color addition was very cool with the winged helmets and large “Mighty Oregon” font.
I liked the dark look for the night game against Washington State at home, where the Ducks won with a last second field goal, 37-35.
7. 2016 vs. Colorado
Oregon opened its Pac-12 Conference play looking like, well, literal Ducks. Although the Ducks lost to Colorado, once I got used to the orange socks/cleats, I loved how the players resembled the mascot. Definitely a statement combination.
6. 2013 Alamo Bowl
Oregon blew out Texas in the 2013 Alamo Bowl, to end Mack Brown’s era, in style. The Ducks displayed a brand new shoulder wing and apple-green that would become iconic. This combo would be higher on the list if the helmet wasn’t forest green.
5. 2015 Rose Bowl
Classy, simple, sleek. I loved the full candy apple green uniforms that Oregon wore as they crushed Florida State, 59-20 in the College Football Playoff Semifinal. This combo was just enough traditional and modern. Plus the Fighting Duck logo on the sleeve is a great touch.
4. 2012 Storm Trooper
November 3, 2012 is a day many Duck fans remember. Oregon “stormed LA” with a very clean and flashy look, beating USC 62-51 in LA Memorial Coliseum. It was an entertaining matchup, as the Ducks’ 61 points were the most any opponent has ever scored against USC, in the history of the school.Carbon fiber wings on the jersey shoulders and a special helmet designed to absorb light… Sweet.
3. 2014 Breast cancer awareness
The Ducks’ Breast Cancer Awareness uniforms against Arizona are a 10/10. Oregon wore all black with pink accents on the cleats, socks, gloves, helmet, numbers and nameplates. Most importantly, the uniforms were designed to raise awareness with a portion of proceeds of the black and pink fan gear going to the Kay Yow Fund.
2. 2014 Throwbacks
I was very close to making this combo the best combination of the decade, heck, maybe in program history. The throwbacks (1994 design) that Oregon wore against rival Washington in 2014 are a classic flashback with the best green and yellow school colors.Plus, the Ducks flew past the Huskies, 45-20, at home to extend its winning streak to 11 games against Washington.
1. 2017 Stomp Out Cancer
These incredible uniforms were designed and inspired by the pediatric cancer patients of OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland. Three children (Sophia, Ethan, Joe) who beat cancer added in their own designs. Unique with intricate detailing of a Duck stomping out the word cancer… this combination is the definition of innovation.Oregon looked sleek, beat Nebraska and donated all the proceeds from apparel sales to Doernbecher's pediatric cancer fund. TOTAL WIN!
BONUS: Oregon's Spring Game uniform
The Ducks "Salute the State" and "Salute the Day" in honor of members of the United States' armed forces and public servants working for the state of Oregon were a great tribute.
BONUS BONUS: Oregon's heritage jerseys
The Webfoots and the Lewis and Clark uniform combinations were also worthy of acknowledgement, despite not making the list. They were a great throwback to the school and state's history.
