Even in the NFL, Justin Herbert is running it up on Pac-12 foes

Justin Herbert has had quite the start to his rookie season.

He is just the second quarterback in NFL history to pass for more than 250 yards in each of his first five starts. He is tied with Russell Wilson for the league lead in touchdown passes of 20 yards or more, and is the first Chargers quarterback since Dan Fouts in 1983 to pass for at least three touchdowns and run for a touchdown in a single game.

His start has been spectacular. The only thing it was missing was a victory... until Sunday.

The Chargers picked up the 39-29 victory over the Jaguars, the team's second win of the season and the first win with Herbert as the starter.

Not only did Herbert pick up the victory, he did it in a way he has gotten used to over the years: Against the Pac-12... kind of.

Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback is Washington State's Gardner Minshew, and his backup is Oregon State's Jake Luton. So, in a way, Herbert picked up a win against his Pac-12 rivals.

Jake Luton spent three seasons at Oregon State, and Herbert was 3-0 against the Beavers over that time. However, Luton was injured in 2017 and 2019, and did not play in the Oregon - Oregon State rivalry game. The one game he did play in, 2018, resulted in a 55-15 victory for the Ducks.

Counting Sunday's win, Herbert is now 4-0 against Jake Luton's teams.

As for Minshew, he played one season at Washington State and hosted Herbert and the Ducks in 2018. At the time, Minshew was one of the best gunslingers in the conference and showed off that arm against the Ducks. The Cougars won that day, 34-20.

Herbert was 0-1 against Minshew, but his Chargers helped him get his revenge on Sunday and improve his record to 1-1.

Those aren't the only Pac-12 quarterbacks that Herbert played in college that he has a chance get a win against in the NFL.

In Week 11, the Chargers will take on the New York Jets and quarterback Sam Darnold.

In 2016, freshman Herbert led the Ducks down to the Coliseum in Los Angeles to take on redshirt freshman Darnold.

Darnold and the Trojans walked away victorious that day, but as Herbert did with Minshew on Sunday, he can get his revenge in the NFL.

Wins in the NFL are awesome. They are made even better when they come against former Pac-12 foes.
