The 2-4 Tennessee Titans have sent quarterback Marcus Mariota to the bench in favor of Ryan Tannehill.
It’s a could-be sad ending to a Nashville story that began with much promise. Drafted No. 2 overall in 2015, Mariota brought high hopes to the Titans, becoming the face of the franchise in his humble, nice and unassuming way.
The Honolulu, Hawaii- native was pulled in the third quarter of Sunday’s 16-0 loss to Denver after the Titans failed to pass midfield in nine drives.
During his five seasons with Tennessee, Mariota has had two general managers, three head coaches and five different offensive play-callers.
On the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, Mariota will be an unrestricted free agent come the end of the season and likely headed elsewhere for 2020 to hopefully reach his full NFL potential.
Now that the Mariota era in Nashville could be coming to an end, I was curious what Oregon fans thought of the Ducks’ only Heisman Trophy winner that lead the team to the College Football Playoff national championship game.
I found out that Oregon fans are a little bit salty, very hopeful and created a hashtag in support of the former Duck star. They also want him to end up in the New England Patriots’ winning culture.
I believe that most of us #GoDucks fans have adopted the #FreeMarcus hashtag. Sure we’re salty, he’s not perfect (shocking I know) however that org has done little top to bottom to play to his strengths. So god speed wherever he lands next. I’ll be there day 1 with a New Jersey.— Ducks•Tats•Tacos (@GoDucksJosh) October 16, 2019
Get him out of TN! He deserves the opportunity to prove himself in a system where he can succeed. Titans don’t deserve a quality person like MM— qwacker4life (@qwacker83) October 16, 2019
Marcus CAN and WILL be a starter again. The issue isn’t him. He would flourish in a different offense and a better offensive line. He’s been sacked (correct me if I’m wrong) the second most in the league. Hard to be great without protection (Andrew Luck)— Mark H. (@Mahhk_Paul) October 16, 2019
Mariota needs to get out of that dysfunctional train wreck at @Titans— Billy Purcell (@Billy_Purcell) October 16, 2019
The titans ruined him and didn’t play him to his strengths. I hope he leaves Tennessee and I hope he lands on his feet in New England— Michael Wentz (@MichaelWentz_) October 16, 2019
Thinking about cancelling my NFL Sunday Ticket. Grew up an Oilers/Titans fan and their mishandling of Mariota has been the most frustrating thing I've ever seen. Very close to no longer being worth my time investment every Sunday.— Ben Hailey (@benhailey85) October 16, 2019
He's getting the Joey Harrington treatment. He went to a bad team, has had a revolving door of coaches and schemes, none of which played to his strengths. I hope he goes to a team that appreciates his unique strengths and finds great success— LoveNotFear (@NdHardee) October 16, 2019
