Justin Herbert needs a little more Russell Wilson in him according to Drew Bledsoe

Since being inserted into the starting QB slot with an unfortunate injury to Tyrod Taylor, Justin Herbert has been proving his doubters wrong.

One person who knows a thing or two about great NFL QBs isn’t surprised in the least that Herbert is having success.

Former Washington State Cougars quarterback and NFL great of 14 years, Drew Bledsoe joined the Brian Noe Show Wednesday to give his thoughts on Herbert.

But here’s the thing:

Bledsoe already knew what was in store for the former Oregon Duck.

“I’m pretty sure at least on some of these shows, that I predicted that he was going to be really successful as an NFL quarterback,” Bledsoe told Noe. “I really liked his game in college. I felt like he was hampered a little bit by the offense -- what they gave him there with the Ducks.”

Herbert, who didn’t get his first start for the Chargers until Week 2 when Tyrod Taylor unexpectedly and accidentally suffered a punctured lung from a team doctor, is 97-of-141 passing at 68.8 percent for 1,195 yards, to go along with his nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Herbert also has 55 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown on the year.

There’s several qualities of Herbert’s game and his build that Bledsoe thinks will definitely help Herbert throughout his career.

“He’s accurate. Seems to see the field really well and then you add his athleticism to that where he’s got some escapability,” Bledsoe said.

The Chargers sixth-overall pick is coming off the best performance of his young career, throwing four touchdowns vs. the Saints, which was the most TD passes thrown by a rookie QB in Monday Night Football history.

In Wednesday’s interview on NBCSNW, Bledsoe mentioned how awful it was to see what happened to Taylor, yet everyone including Taylor, most likely knew that Herbert was the future of the Chargers franchise sooner or later.

I really feel bad for Tyrod…. I like his game.

Bledsoe, who played for the Patriots, Bills and ended his career in Dallas, shared a piece of advice for Herbert.

The Super Bowl champ wants Herbert to take after Seahawks QB Russell Wilson in order to preserve his career.

Justin is gonna be really successful for a long time. The only thing I want him to do -- and this is hard when you’re a competitor -- I want him to put a little bit of Russell Wilson in his game and stop taking the big hits.

Bledsoe explained, “you watch Russ play and he just doesn’t get hit hard and for Justin, he’s a big strong dude, but he’s wearing quarterback pads, man. You can’t go take on the linebacker as tough as you want to be. You just start taking on linebackers wearing those little tiny shoulder pads, he’s gonna end up getting himself hurt.”
