We are now past the halfway mark of this 2020-2021 NFL season.
There have been plenty of surprises this season, both good and bad, but one of the bright spots has been Los Angeles Chargers rookie quarterback and former Oregon Ducks legend Justin Herbert.
Seems like each week Herbert is in the news for some statistical accomplishment, laser touchdown throw, or even getting a pretty significant haircut.
The Chargers knew what they were getting when the organization drafted the young quarterback with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but could they have predicted he would be this good this early in his NFL career? Duck fans had a hunch.
Despite Los Angeles currently standing fourth in the AFC West with a 3-7 record and Herbert only having two wins as a starter, Herbert has put up some insane numbers. Through nine games as the Chargers starter, Herbert has completed 238 of 350 passes (68%) for 2,699 total yards, averaging 7.7 yards per pass and 320.7 passing yards per game. He has thrown 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions.
Here are some of the stats the rookie is on pace for, all of which would be record-setting:
- 397 completions
- 4,498 passing yards
- 37 passing touchdowns
Now let’s break down Hebert’s odds to win the 2020 Offensive Rookie of the Year award, brought to you by our partner PointsBet. Unfortunately, No. 1 overall pick Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow suffered an ACL injury over the weekend, thus increasing Herbert’s odds to win the award.
Herbert is now -1000 odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The Chargers will have some tough tests ahead remaining on their schedule: at Buffalo, hosting New England and Atlanta, at Los Vegas, hosting Denver, and then finishing the season at Kansas City.
A shot at the playoffs is very slim, but this season should be taken as a win for Chargers fans knowing that the quarterback positioning in good hands for the future.
