Exactly one year today, the Oregon women’s basketball team hosted Team USA in an exhibition game to open up the 2019-20 season.
After announcing she would forgo the 2019 WNBA Draft and return for her senior season at Oregon, Sabrina Ionescu led the No. 1 nationally-ranked Ducks to open up the 2019 season.
This game was apart of a four-game Team USA college tour in order to prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics: Texas A&M, Stanford, Oregon State and Oregon. Not surprised that the organization chose to schedule three Pac-12 conference teams.
Led by Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Sylvia Fowles and several other outstanding WNBA players, Team USA had already defeated the three other college teams heading into Matthew Knight Arena on a fall evening in Eugene, Oregon.
This game was a full display of the current talent in the WNBA as well as the future of the league.
Ionescu led all scorers with a career-best 30 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Junior Satou Sabally, who went on to be the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft after Ionescu was selected No. 1, dropped 25 points and six rebounds. And Ruthy Hebard, selected No. 8 overall, recorded another double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Oregon shocked the world (or rather country) with a 93-86 victory over Team USA that would set the tone the rest of the season.
