On Friday, Mario Cristobal made some big changes to his coaching staff at Oregon.

First, replacing Andy Avalos as Defensive Coordinator, Cristobal has hired former Cal Golden Bears DC Tim DeRuyter away from Justin Wilcox and Berkeley, CA.

Hours later, the team also announced the promotion of Don Johnson Jr. from Director of High School Relations to Director of Player Personnel.

Keeping Johnson on staff is critical for his work on the recruiting trail. Cristobal and the Ducks have signed the Pac-12’s top recruiting class in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Nationally speaking, Oregon has signed the No. 6 class for 2021.

Recruiting elite talent is such a critical part of college football.

Johnson has some big shoes to fill and will be taking over the Director of Player Personnel duties from Thomas Arends, who spent the last 11 of the last 12 seasons at Oregon.
