Jackson Mestler is a homegrown kid and now he is one step closer to becoming an Olympian.
The Eugene native ran in the 3,000M Steeplechase qualifier on Monday and needed to finish in the top five to qualify for the finals.
With a time of 8:33:09 he did just that, finishing in fifth place and moving on to the next round. However, the race wasn't without a little bit of luck.
Mestler was just outside the top five when on the final water jump two racers stumbled and let Mestler take advantage. The Oregon senior passed his fallen foes and secured a fifth-place finish.
The race happened to be going on at historic Hayward Field, home of the Ducks, and the Oregon fans in attendance made sure to show their appreciation for the Mestler. "You heard the cheer when they did introductions," Mestler said. "There's something special here, something in the steeple water…there's obviously Hayward Magic when everyone's in the building."
Mestler will take to the track again on Friday at 4:42 PM with a spot on the 2021 Tokyo Olympic team on the line.
